Our History
The “One-Stop” workforce center concept began in 1995 as an initiative proposed by the US Department of Labor. Soon after, a pilot program began in various states to develop a model and bring multiple agencies, which we call
“Partners”, together under one roof to offer an array of services to the public. The concept would allow customers the opportunity to go to one location and access a multitude of services such as finding a new job or beginning a new career, obtain information and assistance with education and training opportunities, researching the labor market, career counseling, and much, much more.
Luckily for South Carolina the wheel did not have to be reinvented. The
South Carolina
Department of Employment and Workforce
(SCDEW) with its
36 “Job Service” offices, now called “Workforce Centers”, were already established and were years ahead of other states who were scrambling to launch new workforce centers. Not only did the
SCDEW have well established offices throughout South Carolina, they possessed years of long standing relationships with the business community and other local, state and federal agencies. Naturally, this was the logical and most cost effective place to locate the new One-Stop Workforce Center system in South Carolina.
The Coastal Workforce Center is one of South Carolina’s premier One-Stop Workforce Centers and has been recognized as a leader in the workforce development arena at the national and international levels.
The Coastal Workforce Center serves customers from all over the world, but primarily serves the citizens of Horry and surrounding counties.
We are an equal opportunity employer/program.
Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities.
